The Science Behind Color Therapy: How Colors Influence Your Mood

What great power colors hold and how they form associations in our mind. And how with the use of the right colors,...

Introduction

The blue sea, the lush green grass, a red rose, sand on our feet - what do these words depict to you? These words have associations in our mind and cause sensorial triggers, and help us feel things. And how do we feel about things? Through our senses of course! The sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. Imagine the power they hold! They transport us in another world altogether because at some point they triggered our senses!

What great power colors hold and how they form associations in our mind. And how with the use of the right colors, we at Coral and Sky try to trigger good memories and associations to make you relax and feel good. If colors hold so much power, it is a good idea to put them to use to help our well-being, right!

Understanding Color Psychology

Color psychology is the study about how colors influence mood, behaviour, emotions and perceptions. Colors trigger feelings and marketing has used it to invoke feelings and make us buy things since decades.

Coral and Sky, as a brand, focuses on wellness and relaxation through our personal care products and we have always designed products and packaging keeping color therapy in mind.

Leveraging the power of colors to make our mood better, to trigger relaxing imagery through product design and packaging that it feels good to the sense of sight. If you feel good, you look good, your body responds to products better and it helps us a tiny bit with overall health.

When we meet people at our pop-ups they are always drawn by the colors of joyful bath bombs, the designs we meticulously add to the soaps - The full moon soap, doze of sunshine - instantly evoke feelings of day and night. Day is all about sunshine and energy and night time is about calmness and rest - and through imagery, colors and fragrances we make products that invoke feelings.  We hope the labor of love helps you feel joy, relaxation and love.

Colour Physiology: How Colour Impacts the Body

Colors impact the body through neurological, physiological, and psychological responses. Our brain processes colors through the visual system, influencing hormones, emotions, and even physical reactions.

It gets really fun and amazing as you deep dive in the science behind it. The colors stimulate the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system that directly affects how we feel.

In layman terms, the sympathetic nervous system is the one that prepares the body for “fight or flight” and sends direct signals to heart, lungs, arteries, sweat glands, and digestive system. And the parasympathetic nervous system is the one that works when we are resting, it takes care of digestion and hormones.

And so colors have a direct impact on our physical and psychological reactions. And yet more often than not, this is used as a pure advertising gimmick to sell more ( red for urgency, blue for trust). Marketing uses imagery, fonts, colors together to not just say what we read but there is semiotics behind it that is very well researched and gets the desired response. More brands should leverage this immense power of colors beyond packaging and make products that have a positive impact on our body and mind, don’t you think? Yet how many such examples pop up when we think of it?

Colour Therapy: Using Colour for Healing

Color therapy or chromotherapy is based on the idea that different colors have a direct impact on our mind, emotions and energy. Light therapy, interior therapy (like used in spas to immediately make you feel relaxed) and even food, clothing, meditation videos and color healing uses this to help you reach the desired state of mind using colors. A soft beige linen will always feel pure, mood lighting in retail stores use it to change how we feel as soon as we enter the store. We all have seen the meditation videos that change from purple to yellow - using color and sounds to make us focused and relaxed.

How Coral and Sky uses color therapy

Coral and Sky applies color therapy principles not only through packaging design but through the carefully crafted products like our soy candles, cold process soaps, bath bombs and the colors and textures we incorporate in our butters, lotions and scrubs. Our products are aimed at emotional well-being by using naturally derived, mood-enhancing scents and hues.

We always play with the fragrance and color together and try to create the balance - some fragrances have a direct color association like lavender, or lemon. And when we use blends, we spend time and research to associate the color that will best describe the fragrance, the touch, the texture and why the product exists in the first place. So color therapy becomes a very intrinsic part of our product and so we proudly say  we are a brand that uses color therapy and aromatherapy in skincare.
